HISTORY - RAINBOW BRIDGE MONUMENT

Rainbow Bridge National Monument is often described as the world's largest natural bridge, a very deserving title. The span of Rainbow Bridge is 275 feet across and at the top it is 42 feet thick and 33 feet wide. Although two other natural arches in southern Utah have confirmed spans several meters longer than Rainbow Bridge, these have been described as arches rather than bridges. With a truly impressive height of 290 feet (88 meters) Rainbow Bridge stands taller than either of its longer fore-mentioned competitors. Rainbow Bridge is the world's most famous example of a natural arch and is the most accessible of the large arches of the world. It can be reached by a two-hour yacht ride via Lake Powell, or by hiking several hours overland from a trailhead with the permission from the local Navajo Nation in Window Rock, Arizona.
