HISTORY - GATEWAY
|
Gateway gets its name by being at the entrance to Colorado from bordering Utah, and the surrounding landscape allows the viewer to look into both states. Upon entering the town, a general store, cafe and tiny motel dot the landscape of this rugged and remote town.Gateway offers access to the rare and elusive backcountry located in the La Sal Mountains and Uncompahgre National Forest. Visitors must remember however that adventure can come at a cost with sudden rainstorms that can quickly flood the desert creeks and gulches.
Gateway is located near the Dolores River, which runs from high in the San Juan Mountains through Gateway to the border of Colorado. In this river, class III and IV whitewater rapids rush along the five-mile stretch through challenging Paradox Canyon. With sheer cliffs and raging rivers underneath an endless sky, it's not hard to see why Gateway provides plenty of excitement for those who visit. The local Fire Department even offers an annual Gateway Dynamite Shoot fundraiser during May and October, where you can fire at real sticks of dynamite placed safely downrange.
