HISTORY - ANETH

Located North of McElmo Creek and the San Juan River, Aneth is a small community built on the site of a Navajo trading post during the early 1880s. Over the years, the town's name has been changed many times. In 1886 it was originally christened Holy Oak after one of the early settlers, and then in the 1900s the name was changed to Anseth. Finally, the town was named Aneth for an operator of the local trading post, and the name has stuck ever since. Although the discovery of oil and gas in the area accelerated settlement and population growth, the population sits at just over 500 people.
